California native Michael Sandahl grew up in Ventura County, shaped by guitar, surfing, backpacking, and a deep appreciation for nature. That mix of art, environment, and curiosity eventually led him to the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he earned a Biology degree and became increasingly drawn to the balance of science and creativity behind winemaking.
What began as an appreciation for wine around the table, grew into a deeper pursuit of the craft — learning through questions, mentorship, hands-on experience, and a growing respect for the way each vineyard tells its own story.
As owner and winemaker of Sandahl Cellars, Michael focuses on small-batch California wines ranging from Santa Barbara to Cucamonga Valley, typically produced in just one to four barrels per varietal. This scale allows for careful attention to each wine, with the goal of showcasing the character of the vineyard while pushing toward the highest quality possible.
Music is also woven into the Sandahl Cellars experience. As a guitarist since childhood, Michael sees wine and music as natural companions — both shaped by rhythm, expression, and most importantly; the ability to bring people together.
At its core, Sandahl Cellars is built around a simple belief: time is limited, every barrel holds possibility, and each bottle has the chance to become part of life’s ceremonies (big or small) — the dinners, conversations, celebrations, and moments we choose to savor.
Because you only have so many vintages in a lifetime.
